After a long session of painting sweet confections, my thoughts turn to the final harvest of fresh vegetables.  These green onions or scallions, as my mother used to call them seem to appear in my daily menu in a variety of forms.  Here they are, just on their own.

My neighbour arrived at the door with a box of peaches. Here in the Okanagan Valley  it's a pretty regular later summer event and always welcome because who doesn't love peaches? ! Peaches and cream? Peaches with yogurt? Even better with ice cream. And for someone who loves to paint the myriad of fuzzy hues from maroon through to fuchsias to the palest peaches and yellows all in one fruit is a dazzling experience.  And then there's the contours, the planes of a peach. We wait all year to eat peaches and here I was in October painting the last of my peach photos. If only the fresh peaches could last so long . . . I tried to capture the fuzziness of a peach. Part of this year's peach series.

Once my mother mastered chou pastry there was no stopping her with the variations she could make, mostly topped or filled with whipped cream, dashed with icing sugar, drizzled with icing or chocolate or dipped into a vat of the glossy liquid.  Homemade custard--heavenly!    I found this lovely cream puff in Keremeos at the bakery on recommendation of a friend who says it is the best bakery east of Montreal. I fear that will change as the supermarket had just become part of the "Buy Low" chain.

As the temperatures drop, my thoughts still linger in summer.  Here's a sample of summer in the Okanagan where July and August are peach season.  

'In the Peach Orchard'  There is nothing more peaceful than walking in an orchard, the only sounds being the hum of bees or the rustling of leaves against the wind. The temperature drops under the canopy of shade and the sun filters through to warm you. But it's the scent of the ripening peaches that will keep you there--the true taste of summer.Photo credit: Judy Millar

I've taken the plunge.  This Saturday Public Voting on the entries takes place between 3 and 8 p.m.  May the best artists win!

I met with friends at Tim Horton's recently and found myself transfixed by the lighted baked goods: muffins, cookies, danishes, but it was the iced donuts that brought me back to a time long ago. My mother had been an exemplary baker, sometimes decorating wedding and birthday cakes for others. She seemed to thrill to the rising of dough, often making puff pastry, donuts, strudels and danish pastry with elaborate weaving, topped by glistening icing. It was rare that I would arrive home and the house would not be filled with those aromas. So I bring you the beginning of my Confections series, much more memory than a part of my life today.

Sweet Pink Icing was very enjoyable to paint. I imagined the texture as I painted it, unable to take a bite until it was done.  9 X 12 acrylic on canvas board.  Purchase now and you can choose your frame colour.

July 1st we went for a walk along the boardwalk in the Oliver Wetlands and I can't describe how hot and dry it would have been if not for the lovely breezes that swept down the Okanagan Valley.  However, at this time and for the last 6 weeks like much of the province of BC, we have been completely blanketed by forest fire smoke.  

It's peach season in July and August in the Okanagan Valley.  Succulent, dripping with sweet fragrant juices, it makes my mouth water to even think about them.  Sliced with ice cream?  Or served with cream?  With my brushstrokes, I attempted to get the fuzziness of peach skin.
